Why now?

We are in the middle of a nature crisis. Since 1970, we have lost an average of 73% of mammal, bird, reptile, fish, and amphibian populations. Every year, we cut down 10 million hectares of trees – an area the size of Iceland – to make space for crops, livestock, and tree-based materials. Forest loss and damage alone contributes around 10% of global warming, while weakening vital ecosystem services. Furthermore, half the world’s countries have degraded freshwater systems, and 2023 was the driest year for global rivers in 33 years.

More than 50% of global GDP is moderately or heavily dependent on nature, making the preservation and restoration of ecosystems not just an environmental imperative, but a critical economic one.

Businesses can play a critical role in reversing this damage. That’s why the UN Global Compact networks of Denmark, Finland, and Sweden have launched the Nordic Nature Starter Pack – to empower companies across the Nordic region to take action and drive meaningful change.
